With the help of Erie Conservation District and Ohio Sea Grant, Old Woman Creek Reserve’s Education Sector brought a new opportunity to local teachers to learn about Lake Erie’s watershed and ecosystem. Local educators spent three days learning how land use decisions impact our streams and our Great Lake. Teachers sampled soil and the permeability of various ground covers, took to the water to try surveying lake fish and lake-bottom organisms, toured Stone Lab, the Put-in-Bay Aquatic Visitor Center, and Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, all before returning to the mainland.
The workshop closed with fishing surveys from Old Woman Creek’s freshwater wetland. The educators truly explored Lake Erie’s food web from top to bottom while evaluating the impact of land use decisions.
